This has raised a number of challenges as most BIM software has been designed for new build and does not take into account the wear and tear and nuances of ageing buildings and facilities. It was initially thought that trying to create accurate as built’s of old properties would not be cost effective, however laser scanning has fundamentally changed this. It is now relatively quick and easy to scan huge sites with incredibly complex and ornate architectural features to make it more available for the owner and facility managers for their immediate usage and implementation.
However, converting this data into an accurate Building Information Modelling is still a challenge. To assist in this area we have produced a number of standard specifications.
