Terrestrial

Terrestrial laser scanning also known as LiDAR (Light detecting and ranging) is becoming the preferred method for fast accurate 3D point cloud data capture.

Terrestrial 3D laser scanning involves a laser scanner mounted on a tripod and scanning takes place as various fix locations by keeping the scanner stationery while the scanning goes on . Terrestrial 3D laser scanning instruments are very accurate averaging around +/- 2.5mm to 5mm per scan point for static scanning. Although some high end scanners may achieve accuracy of 0.2mm depending on many site conditions. There a numerous terrestrial 3D laser scanning system on the market each with their own advantages and disadvantages the data capturing part is still not that difficult but the data processing, registration and integration is much more difficult and time consuming. When carrying out a 3D laser scanning project it is essential that the right laser scanner is used by the experienced person so that the accuracy in registrations is achieved at its highest.

The terrestrial laser scanners can broadly be defined as Phased Based or time of flight. Phase based scanners work by measuring the change of phase of the laser light. The advantage of this technology is the significant speed increase of data capture currently up to million points per second.

Time-of-flight scanners emit a pulse of light which measures the amount of time it takes to travel from the scanner to the object and back , allowing the scanner to calculate the distance. The advantage of this is that data can be captured at much longer distances maximum upto 1082 feet than phase solutions depending on the site situations.

3D laser scanning can generate very large data sets made up of billions and trillions of points of data. To work with 3D laser scanning point cloud data, there is sheer need of laser scan data specialist software to deliver the final details and files to the users.

Scannpoint USA is keen to come up with the point cloud data visualiser called “NuView” which shall be offered to our clients on web based app for PC, Tablets & Mobile phones at free of cost to have the accessibility by our clients of the point cloud 3D laser scanning data at any given time without installing any specific license or software. It will be cloud based platform to use it online for virtual exploration.

Scannpoint USA provide a full 3D laser scanning service solution and advise on all stages of your project from data capture, to post processing and delivery in BIM or CAD.
